It is against the law to work as guide outside the frame set for this job. We can work only through an agency, this way tourists have confidence in you. Also at all places where we as guides work we are asked a few questions, among which is: What is the name of the agency? If you work on your own how are you going to answer? The car you ride must be a licensed car and you are supposed to carry a voucher from the agency which is a work order. And mind you tourist police is very smart, do not put yourself in this position. They never approach us as long as we are doing the right thing, but they observe well and have sharp eyes and ears. They know everything from the way we walk.
I sometimes want to accompany friends or family members to the museum, but I abstain so that nobody thinks that I am working – off line- if I may say.

People who travel to Egypt and pay lots of money to get there do not want a "Tour Guide." They want a real Egyptologist as a guide, which you are not. I recently toured Egypt, and had one of the top Egyptologists as my private guide. We could hear some of the "tour guides" at the sites telling their stories, and he would start laughing, because the "guides" were just making up stories and lying about "history."

If you work alone you may face many problems. I’m not trying to disappoint you but try it if you like. I know you may get sick of dealing with companies but there are certain role of a tour operator, the guide can’t do it without him. I don’t know your reasons to try to work alone but if you like we can discuss it. I work in tourism and I face many problems and like to know also about other problems coz I try always to make something new to get rid of the old known problems.

Balsam : You can go with your friends to the museum as long as they will not tell the officer you are working and not a friend. They ask you for license if they see you working and they are experienced enough to get the difference.

You will get caught, because your act will be taken as getting away from paying taxes. Which I believe is the main reason for your wish.

Try My Space, make your own page and sell yourself and Egypt. You could also begin to create some blogs on the internet.
But with respect, do it professionally.
I have worked several years in the tourist industry in Egypt bringing specialist ancient culture and historical site tours from Australia.
Spelling is very important and it will put people of having trust in you and your abilities. No matter how much you know or how good you are at your job. Remember it is a very competitive industry and you have to be able to offer value and quality and still compete against the big companies.
So as well as advertising you have to get to know people who matter. This way you can get doors opened for you that others find bolted shut.
This is so important in business anywhere but especially Egypt.

Good Luck,I really enjoyed my time as a tour leader and guide.
It is very true that just being a tour guide and having the certificate is not really enough. I am a graduate Egyptologist and would recommend that people only use a guide who has a University degree or is a final year student in Egyptology or Middle Eastern/African archeology.
We cant have people telling the tourists that Napoleon is responsible for the Sphinx loosing most of it face, for example
