When I took a course on Egypt in college, we used David P. Silverman’s "Ancient Egypt" as one of our textbooks (see link to Amazon below). I think it’s a good general work on Ancient Egypt. There are essays on subjects like Egyptian death rituals, the pyramids, city life, and women in Ancient Egypt.

This book does have a lot of photos and illustrations, enough that you could also display it as a coffee table book, but it’s not a picture book.

You’re local library should have dozens. You can pick out several of them that way you can have time to look over each one and decide if one is to childish or to advanced. If you find one that you really like you could buy it at a bookstore, if they don’t have it try amazon.com They normally carry about everything. Good luck.

The Folio edition of "the Egyptians" is a readable text, that is not too inaccessible.
