They all were below cats, Cats where considered the closest thing to god, and killing a cat would be a huge crime which one would pay with his/her life. Something that should be done now.. Darn don’t you wish society would behave like they did back in ancient egypt
And why did they worship the cats?

Egyptians considered all cats to be manifestations of Bast or Bastet (same goddess) protector of women and children, also a mighty warrior. They beleived this mostly because where there were cats there was less disease….cats kill the rats and mice that spread illness.

Some powerful but foolish person should hav imposed his views on the poor masses .
Cats generally shed their hairs .Since they are allowed to move freely in the house, the hairs that fall from the cat might find its way into the stomach of the people in the house .This is likely to cause cancer and other diseases .so generally even India it is said that it is a sin to cause the hairs of the cat fall so as to discourage people from doing anything that would cause the fall of the hairs of the domestic cats . The crossing of one’s path by a cat , at the time of starting for some work , is considered to be a bad omen .At the same time , the crossing of one’s path by a black cat , at the start of the journey for something , is said to be a good omen.
Some such reason should have been there for the ancient Egyptians to consider the cats to be of some importance
