Because it is a place worth visiting, as I am sure Sinai and Petra are. Aswan is one of the driest inhabited places in the world. It sits on the ancient city of Syene, which was in antiquity the frontier town of Egypt to the south.

I went to Egypt & Aswan last summer. While the dam is the highlight, it offers a unique perspective on modern Egypt. I believe it has the largest population of Egyptian Nubian people and very unige shopping/markets. Plus, it’s usually the main gateway to Abu Simbel temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_simbel) which, in my opinion, is the greatest Egyptian site (its more impressive than the Pyramids & Sphinx). You really feel like you’re Indiana Jones!
